The Compass of the North and East — Dibyasree Nandy

The Compass of the North and East

Born with a compass
He knew exactly what was to be done
‘Which way do I go’- The thought never crossed his mind
He had to traipse northward
Run towards the dawning light
Meant to purge all evil from sight
He’d raise a gun with a smile
And glance down at his scarlet palm
With muted wails of taking lives
Of those seeped in the quagmire of evil
The privileged ones who feasted on the weak.

Oh, he never once regretted
His existence of sin
Once his compass pointed east
He’d give himself up to the gallows
In gladness, burning.
